What To Do If College Isn’t For You

For many people, college is a rite of passage. When you finish school, you head off to college before getting a job and then settling down. However, going away to college isn’t for everyone. Sometimes, your studies can take you in different directions. You may assume that you have to move away from home and attend lectures and classes on a daily basis to further your education, but there are other options out there.

I want to study more, but I don’t want to go away to college

For many people, their college years are the best of their life. You meet new people, you learn new things, and you gain a sense of independence. However, this experience is not for everyone. Some people don’t want to move away from home or start a full-time course. Perhaps you want to make money while you study or you’re keen to do a part-time course, for example. If this is your preference, there are options and opportunities out there. One path you may take is something like a csusm extended learning program. Practical experience

You need practical skills for many jobs. In some cases, it’s best to combine time in the classroom with experience in the workplace. Options like apprenticeships and work placements enable you to do this. You can get to grips with the theory behind what you’re doing in the lecture theater and develop your practical skills in a real-life setting. Apprenticeships are also beneficial because you can learn from more experienced professionals, and you get an idea of what it’s like to have a job before you enter the world of work officially.

 

Climb the ladder

Not all jobs require a college degree, and it’s often possible to start at the bottom and work your way up. Experience counts for a lot in some industries, and if you can get a foot in the door, you’ll soon be learning skills that will benefit your future career. If you have a dream job in mind, look out for entry-level posts, internships, and work placements. Email or call relevant companies, and make sure your resume is up to date. If you get an interview, make sure you’re prepared. Think about what kinds of questions you may be asked and try and formulate some answers. Dress smartly, arrive on time, and try and stay as calm as possible. Don’t panic if you don’t get the first job you apply for. Most people don’t reach the top of the tree without having to bounce back from a series of setbacks.

 

For some, college is the most wonderful experience. For others, there may be other options that are more appealing. It is possible to undertake further education in many different forms now, and you also have the opportunity to learn on the job or take entry-level posts.
