Why You Should Care About Cruelty Free Cosmetics

It’s been over two years since I started my cruelty-free journey and this blog. I have learned a lot about what cruelty-free means and I have been able to teach my friends, family, and readers about animal testing and why it needs to end. I feel like everyone is aware of animal testing but it’s when we turn our awareness into caring and become advocates in the fight against animal testing. Here’s why you should care about purchasing cruelty-free cosmetics.

It’s inhumane.

What got me interesting in learning about animal testing is a project I was assigned my freshman year in college. For my computer graphic design class, we had to pick a social topic and a word to describe both sides of the “argument” then create two posters that showed both sides. I did some research and came along animal testing, I used this site as a source for my project and was astonished that they still tested on animals even though there are alternate testing methods that leave animals out of the picture. A lot of companies claim that they test humanely, hence why I chose the word humane for both of my posters. There’s absolutely nothing humane about forcing chemicals onto (or even into) animals. Animals do not deserve to sit in cages all day and be tortured. Period.

It’s unnecessary.

Like I stated above, there are alternative testing methods that don’t harm animals. Many argue that there is no other way, but there is! In history, numerous things have been tested on animals and have been deemed safe or unsafe, therefore we don’t need to keep testing said ingredients on animals if they have already come to a conclusion about them. (A lot of safe ingredients are STILL being used to test on animals, which is unnecessary since they’ve already passed previous tests, correct?) We have come so far with technology that we have invented new ways to test products or ingredients – which is also cheaper than testing on animals! P.s. Animals don’t wear cosmetics, so why do we inject stuff into their eyes? Doesn’t make any sense.

It’s more than just bunnies and mice – it’s other animals too.

Yup, you heard that right. Did you know that beagles are the most commonly used dog breed for animal testing? And do you want to know why they use beagles? It’s because they’re naturally trusting of humans and they’re docile – so basically, they use that to their advantage in the lab and abuse those poor babies that just want to be loved. Totally uncalled for. Not to mention, most of the tests done on animals go wrong, so then those poor animals just get euthanized with no chance at a normal life.

It’s not accurate.

If you haven’t noticed, you aren’t a mouse, or a guinea pig, or a fish…so why do laboratories test on these animals when we really aren’t like them? “92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work” (Source). We aren’t wired the same as the animals that they test on – just like some humans have more sensitive skin than others. We have completely different body make ups, hence why we shouldn’t be testing on animals since these products/chemicals/drugs/ingredients could react totally different in a human beings body. THERE ARE OTHER TESTING METHODS OUT THERE, yo, laboratories get with the program! Stop testing on animals.

Now, as an ending note I would like to clarify a few things in case the comments get heated (I don’t think they will but you never know). 1.) Animal testing has been done for years and years and years. We are now in 2017, we have a list of ingredients that are safe and we don’t need to continue to test on animals if we know what ingredients are safe,

1.) Animal testing has been done for years and years and years. We are now in 2017, we have a list of ingredients that are safe and we don’t need to continue to test on animals if we know what ingredients are safe, kapeesh?

2.) Animal testing has contributed to life-saving procedures as well as medicine. Now, this is where it gets a little weary and confusing. There are some things in life that we won’t be able to get that haven’t been tested on animals – like medicine. BUT, there is a HUGE difference between testing medicine and testing VANITY products on animals. Just because you know that there are some things that have been tested on animals that you need, doesn’t mean you should just give up on buying cruelty-free products. Your dollar is your vote and you buying from L’Oreal, MAC, etc isn’t going to fix the problem – you’re contributing to it. MAC claims that they are in the fight against animal testing and only test where required by law and that’s a load of crap. They still sell in China even though they KNOW that China requires them to test their cosmetics by law, so they are not in the fight to stop animal testing. (This is just MY opinion, it’s not a “cruelty-free” law y’know).

3.) Start somewhere. Whether it’s purchasing a cruelty-free foundation or mascara, that’s a start. You don’t have to replace every single makeup product you own today just because I’ve been talking about animal testing, but when you go to purchase new items – take a second, think about it, and support cruelty-free brands (there are plenty out there)!

Not sure where to start? Check out my cruelty-free on a budget posts, my posts featuring cruelty-free products, and check out Logical Harmony for a HUGE list of cruelty-free brands!

I hope you enjoyed the post. Sorry if it seemed all over the place, I saw another blog post that kind of ticked me off so I decided to write about my side and why I am a cruelty-free beauty blogger.

Thanks so much for reading, as always <3

Zabana Essentials Haul + Mini Review

Hey loves! It’s been a little while since I did my last haul and I’ve been promising on instagram that this one would be up soon (I’m just terrible at procrastinating, y’know!!)

So finally, it’s here! Let me tell you a little about Zabana Essentials. Zabana has 100% natural and vegan cosmetics that are handcrafted in California (I love stuff that’s made in the USA!) They have a range of products, like deodorants, a face serum, dry shampoo and even an armpit detox bar (say whaaa?!) I’ve been trying these out over the past few weeks & I’m hooked, so keep on reading to see what I got and what I like about them!

I’m a sucker for anything mini sized and also natural deodorants! I was intrigued by the fragrances they have available and how some are baking soda free (which I need since baking soda irritates the crap outta me). These definitely aren’t your typical natural deo smells and I love that. I picked up Lime Berry Basil  and Sage Blood Orange. These are the perfect size to shove in your purse or backpack! I currently have the Lime Berry Basil one in my locker at work and I love freshening up with it, it smells so goooood. I do recommend these if you’re looking for a new natural deo or just want to stock up on some minis! (Plus! They’d be a great gift for someone who wants to delve into the natural deo/green beauty world *hint hint*)

I live off of dry shampoo and don’t know what I would do without it. I haven’t tried a powder dry shampoo so that’s really why I picked this up! Plus, the scent caught my eye. It’s really easy to use – just sprinkle some on, let it sit then style per usual. (They recommend using a ‘natural bristled brush’ but I just use my regular hairbrush and it works fine. I also like to rub it in with my fingers). It smells great and does a really good job at making my hair look like it was just washed. I dooooo recommend!

I wanted to try out their face sprays so I got both of the ones that they offer. Lavender Lemongrass is for combo + oily skin and helps to detoxify and balance the skin. Citron Blossom is for all skin types and brightens and rejuvenates the skin. I use one or the other depending on my face issues. Usually I like to use the Citron Blossom one before putting on my makeup to help get it ready for application. If you want, you can also use these as a cleanser (sort of) – just spray it on then use a cotton round to remove excess dirt and oil. I love that these are in glass bottles so I can reuse them when I finish them off! I really like these and do recommend them as well.

Then lastly, the Armpit Detox Bar! When using natural deo (or transitioning into natural deo), you may find that you don’t smell as fresh or that it’s not working…that’s why you need to detox yo’ pits! This is made with Coconut, Charcoal and Clay so it’ll really suck out all the junk stuck in your pit pores and leave you with squeaky clean pits 🙂 They say to wet the bar, lather it in your hands, rub the lather in your pits then let it sit for 2-3 minutes then rinse off. I have noticed a difference when using this – I smell fresher for longer and I just feel more comfortable wearing natural deodorant when I use it. It’s definitely a must have for natural deo users, so get one stat!

Overall, I was super pleased with my first purchase from Zabana. They have amazing cruelty free, vegan + natural products and I can’t wait to try out all of the other stuff they have to offer. Do you want to try out Zabana Essentials? Let me know!

Thanks for reading, as always <3

Whish Beauty Review *

Hey lovelies! I’m excited to tell you about these products from Whish that I was able to try out!

Whish is a company that is dedicated to the discovery of natural ingredients which enable intelligent choices for your skin. All of their products are made in the USA with earth friendly packaging and ingredients. None of their products contain parabens, sulfates, TEA or DEA, petrochemicals, or phthalates (yay!). They are also Leaping Bunny certified!

They have skincare products, hair removal products, self tanners, anti-aging products and some body treatments (like body scrubs and body butters). You can purchase their products straight from their website or from Ulta. Now onto the review!

bathandbodygelFirst up is the Bath & Body Gel in Coconut (13 oz for $16). This comes in 9 different scents so I’m sure you’ll find one you love! The body wash contains organic aloe, organic raspberry butter and organic shea butter so it’s a super moisturizing product – which is something my body needs. So while moisturizing, it also cleanses the skin with it’s unique blend wheat, sugar and corn derived ingredients. Organic cucumber extract and organic marigold soothe the skin so your skin will be totally refreshed and ready to take on the day! (* I just want to let you know that these body washes do contain beeswax, so if vegan products are your thing, I would avoid this! 🙂 )bodywash

I have to say that this is probably the most gentle and effective body wash I have ever used. Other body washes (even those that claimed that they were moisturizing) totally “stripped” my skin and left it feeling so dry and tight – which isn’t a good feeling at all. I also love the scent because it’s not too overwhelming, it’s just right. I also love the pump on the bottle so I don’t have to fumble with squeezing a bottle.

Overall, highly recommend this body wash if you’re looking for something that will leave you smelling yummy and feeling super clean & moisturized!

You guys know how I love natural deodorant so I was super essssssicted (in a Kathleen Lights voice) to try this out. I think that this is a really unique product because it’s gel formula AND it also reduces hair growth. Yes, you read that right! This deodorant has a natural hair inhibitor in it so you’ll be left with smoother underarms, for longer. This is an aluminum free deodorant that smells great and you’ll feel better that you’re using a natural product on your body, I promise. It is $18 butttt, I feel like you can’t go wrong with a deodorant that reduces hair growth.

This deodorant is formulated with organic saccharomyces ferment, which is a bacteria that naturally combats odor. Chaparral extract is the ingredient that reduces hair growth and it’s loaded with antioxidants. Just like the body wash, this deodorant contains ingredients to soothe the skin as well!

This is how the deodorant gel looks when it comes out of the top. You have to twist the top in a clockwise motion (and for whatever reason, it’s super hard for me to do this? I struggle with getting some out, but it does come out eventually!) and apply a small amount to each underarm. I love the cooling sensation of the gel, maybe that’s a weird thing but it just feels nice ok. This deodorant also smells really good and does a good job of keeping the odor at bay. If you wanted to try this out before purchasing the full size, they also have deodorant wipes available.

Although the deodorant has a higher price tag, I do enjoy using it, I haven’t seen any results of slower hair growth but I will try to keep you updated if I notice anything different!

Have you tried out products from Whish before? Do you want to? Let me know in the comments below 🙂

I hope you enjoyed the post and thanks for reading, as always! <3
